Conjunctivitis, commonly referred to as Pink Eye, is an inflammation of the conjunctiva—the thin, transparent tissue that lines the inside of the eyelid and covers the white part of the eye. The conjunctiva plays an essential role in lubricating and protecting the eye by producing mucus and tears. Pink Eye can be triggered by various factors, including bacterial, viral, or fungal infections, as well as allergic reactions. Because the condition has multiple possible causes, symptoms may vary; however, common signs include redness, irritation, itchiness, and crusting around the eye. Your eye care provider can help to determine the underlying cause and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan to relieve your symptoms and promote recovery.
