Your glasses are an investment, and we want to make sure you know how to properly care for them to ensure they last as long as possible.
Cleaning Lenses
Lenses should ONLY be cleaned wet – rubbing the lenses when dry can mean any dust or debris on the lenses gets scraped across the surface causing scratches
Two ways to clean
- With clean hands, rinse your lenses gently under lukewarm tap water. Apply a small amount of regular blue dawn dish soap and very gently rub it around with the pads of your fingers. Rinse off the soap and pat dry with an approved lens cloth.
OR
- Spray both sides of the lens with an approved cleaning solution (you can pick this up in our office). Then use an approved lens cloth to gently rub both sides until clean and dry.
Lens cloths can build up oil, dust, and debris over time – eventually this can make you feel like you’re just rubbing the smudges around rather than taking them off. Your lens cloth should be regularly replaced, and they can be washed and dried in the laundry as long as you avoid fabric softeners or harsh detergents.
Cleaning Frames
- Dust and debris can be removed from frames using compressed air. Water and mild soap (traditional blue Dawn dish soap is the best!) can also be used to clean frames (try to use room-temperature water if using this method – on rare occasions you may need to use warmer water).
- AVOID other cleaning products (especially those containing acetone, bleach, etc) as these can interact with the metal or plastic of the frame and/or the lenses (you can end up with discoloration, areas that rust, etc.)
- If the frames become sticky (or coated by something that cannot be easily removed with water alone), GooGone is usually safe to try.
Storing Glasses
We like to say: “If glasses are not on your face, they should be in a case”. If glasses need to be set down for brief periods, they should be left open and stood gently on the lower rim, or folded closed and set down with the folded temples touching the surface and the lenses upward (not touching anything). One of the biggest reasons for developing scratches is setting glasses down with lenses touching the surface of the table, case, etc. Lenses should always point up and not touch anything!
Other tips: Never put your glasses any place your feet or bottom go (chair, arm of the couch, floor, your bed), and watch out for toddlers, cats, and dogs! Keep your glasses out of their reach.
