Did you know that any frame in our office can be made into sunglasses? If you find something you love and think would make great sunglasses, ask us how!
Sunglasses can be made in two ways: tints, and polarization.
A tint reduces the overall intensity of light. They range from light dark in a variety of color options. Tinting does not specifically reduce glare.
Polarization involves a filter built into the lens to block specific types of glare (typically off of horizontal surfaces like the road, lakes, etc.) – this helps improve vision significantly when driving in bright conditions, or when doing activities on water or snow-covered areas. This blocking can interfere with viewing some electronic displays, so may not be the right choice for some professions or hobbies.
The most important part of any pair of sunglasses is the UV protection, and not all sunglasses are created equal in the amount and type of UV they protect us from! UV exposure is a contributing factor to many eye diseases, and the eyelids are one of the most common places for skin cancer to occur, so we need to protect ourselves the best we can! Sunglasses should block ALL harmful UV-A and UV-B rays up to 400nanometers. A darker tint does NOT guarantee UV protection – the lenses need to be specifically designed to filter UV.
Other sunglass tips: Large frames are not just stylish, they’re helpful at blocking rays over a larger area. Frames that wrap around the face ensure protection despite the angle between your eyes and the sun!
